Kids’ New Year’s Eve at LEGOLAND® California – Being a former employee of LEGOLAND California (and a current freelancer), I am partial to this event, but it truly is one of the best ways to celebrate New Years with kiddos. You get the fun of a theme park PLUS the experience of a live rock concert for kids with bands like Lucky Diaz and the Family Jam Band and Justin Roberts and the Not Ready For Naptime Players (do you know them? If not go look them up on Spotify. You and the kids with love them!). Also, at 6:00pm, LEGOLAND does their own special time zone for kids with a “Brick Drop” and fireworks. It is an absolute blast. Plus, if you score a babysitter, you’ll still have time to take the kids home and then do your own thing at night. Win. Win.
New Years Eve Sock Hop at the Sheraton Carlsbad – Wear your saddle shoes & poodle skirts, or just come as you are, and celebrate the new year with a DJ, a champagne/cider toast, a game room for the kids including Ping pong, Wii, Xbox, Foosball, Face Painting, board games, Billiard Games, and of course boppin’ til you droppin’. You’ll also be able to see several fireworks from around North County.
Staycation at the Omni La Costa Resort: To enjoy all that this wicked rad resort has to offer on New Years, like the Kidtopia center for kids and the world-famous La Costa Spa, you do need to be guest of the hotel, so check out their deals and make it a staycation to ring in 2014. The kid activities include obstacle courses, face painting, laser tag, glow-in-the-dark crafts, a live reptile show, Wii games, balloon drop and much more! And the adults can enjoy rejuvenating spa time followed by delicious cuisine and cocktails at the Blue Fire Grill (try their antioxidant mojito, yum!).
Celebrate the Time Zones:
If you are friendly with your neighbors, consider planning a progressive party where you can celebrate the New Year with different parts of the world.
2:00pm – Athens – Make togas out of toilet paper and have some falafels and lamb kabobs.
4:00pm – England – Play a game of football (soccer) or dress up like royalty and have tea with biscuits.
7:00pm – Buenos Aires – Celebrate South American style with empanadas, ceviche and tropical fruit. Then have the kids build ancient ruins with LEGO® bricks.
9:00pm – New York City – Watch the Ball Drop and have a Rockin’ New Years Eve with Ryan Seacrest.
Rock it Old School! (Read: how I did it when I was a kid):
Invite some family and/or friends over, or just keep it small with your own family, play board games, watch movies, wear homemade or store-bought-from-Party-City hats, drink champagne/cider, watch the ball drop in Times Square and bang pots and pans in the street at midnight.
Whatever you end up doing, make sure you take some time with your kids to talk about your favorite memories of 2013 and what you l look forward to in 2014. You can even make dream boards with your kids so you all know what you want to achieve in the new year.
