Date Night at the San Diego Zoo

We know the San Diego Zoo is a fabulous family place to go as a family. But it is also a great place for a date night!  My husband and I got passes this year and got the bright idea to go just the two of us for a date night.  I don’t know why we didn’t think of it earlier, but we will making use of it several more times before our passes expire!  Passes for a year are just over $100 for the two of you, and they include both the Zoo and the Safari Park.

We went on a Friday evening right after my husband finished work.  In the summer, the Zoo is open til 9 p.m., so we had several hours to enjoy the zoo.  There are so many options to enjoy the zoo as a couple.  You could go completely free (besides the initial cost of the passes) and just stroll around the beautiful zoo enjoying the magnificent exhibits and variety of animals – especially some of their lively activity as it starts to get dark.

We opted to try out one of the restaurants for dinner.  We were recommended Albert’s Restaurant, so we gave it a try.  The atmosphere is beautiful, especially if you get a chance to eat outside on the patio.  The wait staff was courteous and the food was delicious.

We spent the rest of our time talking, holding hands, and wandering around the zoo enjoying ourselves.  It is a different experience going as a couple instead of with kids.  Both are fun but in different ways.  As adults, we could stay longer in one place if we chose.  We could actually read some facts about the animals. We could walk as quickly or slowly as we wanted.

As the evening rolled on and it started to get dark, some of the exhibits started closing, some of the animals went to bed.  But some animals, especially nocturnal animals, come alive and are fun to watch. And the crowds clear out as it gets late. Another activity to enjoy is riding the Skyfari aerial tram and get a beautiful view of the zoo from above. You can also enjoy music from The Outback Band or the Sand Band or shows such as the trampoline acrobatics of the Roo Crew or Didgeri-Dude & the Boardwalkers, the contortionist.

No matter what you decide to do, the San Diego Zoo is a great place for a few hours away with your sweetheart.
