Holiday Fun in San Diego

December is such a fun time of year, almost magical.  I really make an effort to make it a season filled with family traditions and making memories, thinking of others, and feeling happy.  It can be a stressful time of year with all that is going on, especially if you venture out for shopping, but if we remember that we don’t need to do everything and focus on what really matters, it will be “the most wonderful time of the year”.  Here are some December events going on in San Diego to enjoy with your family.

La Jolla Christmas Parade & Holiday Festival – Get your holidays started on December 2nd by heading to the parade and festival in La Jolla. Early on they will have equestrians as well as an antique aircraft flyover.  The parade begins at 2 p.m., followed by a craft fair with games, food, lots of fun, as well as a visit with Santa. The tree lighting will be at 4:30 p.m.  Get all the details on their website.

December Nights – Balboa Park is always a fantastic place to visit, and December Nights makes it even better!  All decked out for the holidays with decorations, music, food, lots of people, and free entrance to the museums, December Nights is a great place to meet up with friends and families this holiday season.  December Nights will take place Friday, December 7th from 5-9 p.m. and Saturday, December 8th from 12 noon to 9 p.m.

Christmas Lights – Taking an evening to see the lights is always a relaxing step away from the hustle and bustle of the holidays.  Whether you stroll along festive neighborhoods or drive through, take time to enjoy your loved ones with the beauty of Christmas lights.  Our favorite neighborhood is Christmas Card Lane in Rancho Penasquitos.  Each home has a themed Christmas Card with additional decorations on the lawn, house, driveway, and more.  From Mickey Mouse to Star Wars, The Super Friends to Little Mermaid, and Wallace & Gromit to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, it seems they have almost every character covered!  Christmas Card Lane can be started on Oviedo St. off Black Mountain Rd. or on Twin Trails off Carmel Mountain Rd.  Additional locations around San Diego can be found here.

Go to the Theatre! How the Grinch Stole Christmas  is playing at the Old Globe Theatre in Balboa Park now through December 29th!  A special event out to the theatre, sharing a classic story is a great way to enjoy the holidays!  Get your tickets hereThe Nutcracker is another Christmastime favorite.  Playing at the Spreckels Theatre through December 24th, get your tickets now!

Visit Old Town San Diego State Historic Park – On Saturday, December 15th, all of the shops and restaurants in Old Town will be open and decorated with holiday cheer.  They will have treats, activities and longer shopping hours as well as strolling carolers.  And on Sunday, December 16th, they will have a reenactment of Mary and Joseph’s journey to Bethlehem at 4 p.m. There will be carolers and childrens’ choirs beginning at 2 p.m. and a pinata following the reenactment at 5 p.m.  Another fun evening could be spent at Old Town enjoying one of their Bonfire Nights.  Beginning December 15th, Wednesday through Sunday, you can join carolers and other performers from dusk until 9 p.m. and enjoy free s’mores around the bonfire.  Be sure to visit the Old Town Mormon Battalion Historic Site, which will also have holiday music in the evenings and is a fun place to learn some history.
