Catalina Island, just off the coast of Southern California, was a favorite family getaway for me during my teenage years. My sister and her husband used to take me with them there on their family vacations. I would get to babysit my little nieces and also have a fun-filled week in paradise. I haven’t been back in years but now have the perfect opportunity to return: The Catalina Film Festival. From May 4-6, 2012, the second annual Catalina Film Festival will be celebrating film with over 75 movies plus nightly events and entertainment.
This year’s opening night will feature a special screening of The Avengers® with a special appearance by Stan Lee, the genius creator behind famed comics Spider-Man®, The Hulk®, X-Men®, Fantastic Four®, Iron Man®, and Thor®.
Mr. Lee will be receiving “The Great Communicator” Award, bestowed by the Ronald Regan Presidential Foundation and will be present for a special Q & A with the audience after the screening of The Avengers.
If you are not necessarily a comic book fan, but are a lover of film, there will be plenty of other genres to enjoy and certainly a number of celebrities to hob nob with over the weekend. Plus, the island is full of fun activities for the entire family so you can make it a mini-vacation. Here are just a few of my suggestions of things to do on this delightful gem of an island:
- Eat pizza at Antonio’s and throw peanut shells on the ground.
- Indulge in a Buffalo Burger at Erik’s on the Pier.
- Rent Golf Carts to see the island.
- Take the Glass Bottom Boat to see the underwater sea life
- Go miniature golfing
- Enjoy lunch at the Wrigley Mansion
- Rent Paddle Boats to work out those quad muscles
