Left the world of sales/marketing to raise my 4 energetic boys. I homeschool. I do natural birth. I cook, play piano, scuba dive. I love exploring new places, especially with my family.

Old Town San Diego’s Mormon Battalion Historic Site

As I look for places to take my kids, a place that has history, entertainment and is free is definitely a great combination for me!   We only had a short time to be in Old Town San Diego one day and as we strolled around, we came across the Mormon Battalion Historic Site.  It was redone almost two years ago, and they have done a great job with it!

The period architecture is beautiful, reminding you of the time when the Mormon Battalion marched from Iowa to California in the mid-1800’s to help in the war with Mexico.  You step inside and the presentation is almost like a show at Disneyland!  The tour starts facing a group of about 8 black and white photos of pioneers. Then the people in the photos start talking and relaying their story. The tour moves through rooms using movies, reenactments, and more to tell the story. It is really entertaining and my kids loved it!

At the end of the tour, you can get an old-fashioned picture taken and emailed to you (and receive a print out – all for free!) There are some interactive exhibits as well, then head outside for more fun. You can pan for gold, do laundry on a washboard, try on period clothing, make bricks, and see authentic artifacts.  Go up the stairs or elevator for a beautiful view of Old Town San Diego.

Hands-on exhibits for the kids. A great taste of California history. Fun and entertaining while informative. And did I mention it’s free?  Such a great place to visit!

A fun event coming up is the Mormon Battalion Commemoration Day on January 28 from 10 am – 4 pm.  Celebrating the anniversary of the arrival of the Mormon Battalion, there will be a dutch oven cook-off and lots of hands-on crafts for the time period. Take your family to Old Town State Historic Park for a great historical and fun activity!
