Despite the fact that I can boast of playing the lead role of Sandy in my high school’s performance of Grease, have performed a saucy version of the Salt N Peppa classic Shoop over fourteen times at friends’ weddings and was a contestant on a nationally televised singing game show in which I may or may not have won a lot of money, I cannot sing. Seriously.
Okay, I can hold a tune, like in a car or a shower. I am not as they say “tone deaf.” But, let’s just say, I do not have what it takes to be an American Idol. I SO wish that I did. My biggest dream in life is to be a Broadway star, hence all the talk of jazz hands here and on my personal blog.
I went to one singing audition as an adult, in hopes that somehow I would pull it off. However, after seeing the looks on the auditors’ faces when I hit a sour note, I will not be doing that again until a procedure is invented that makes me sing like Idina Menzel.
So this week, as the American Idol auditions are taking place in San Diego, just five minutes from where I grew up, I will be singing into my girls’ Barbie hair brush along with their High School Musical CD (they became obsessed with HDM last summer after my date with Zac Efron), imagining myself singing Me and Bobby McGee to J-Lo, Steven Tyler and Randy.
How about you? Do you have any fantasies of being a famous performer? Do you have what it takes to be the next American Idol?
