Quidam: The Latest Cirque Du Soleil Phenomenon

If you have ever been to a performance by the utterly remarkable, uber-limber and oddly odd-defying cirque troop known as Cirque Du Soleil, you know that they give new meaning the term “mind-blowing.” And if you have never been to see CDS perform live, I say “This is your lucky day, friend!” Cirque Du Soleil is back on the touring track with a new show called Quidam, and is making a one week stop in San Diego beginning March 30th at the Valley View Casino (formerly known as The Sports Arena, and will ALWAYS be known as the Sports Arena to native San Diegans like me.)

My first experience with Cirque Du Soleil was in the mind 90’s at a show called Mystère at the Treasure Island Casino in Las Vegas and I was absolutely in awe. Every five minutes I was gasping and saying things like, “Whoa, how does he do that? And “Holy sh*t, how does her body move in that direction?” The combination of exciting music, incomprehensible movement and overall mystical mood left me with goose bumps and my mouth agape. It was truly mind-blowing.

Since seeing Mystère all those years ago, I have not had an opportunity to see Cirque Du Soleil perform since. I have seen knock-off Cirque troops perform but nothing has been quite the same. So I am looking forward to seeing their latest show called Quidam. Here is a brief blurb from the creators about the show:

Young Zoé is bored; her parents, distant and apathetic, ignore her. Her life has lost all meaning. Seeking to fill the void of her existence, she slides into an imaginary world—the world of Quidam—where she meets characters who encourage her to free her soul.

• Thursday, March 31 at 7:30 p.m.

Cirque is an amazing show, even if they have scary clowns! Eeek! 😉

The first time I saw Cirque du Soleil I was so blown away that I looked into working for the company. Of course I couldn’t be a performer (lol) so I looked into admin opportunitites. I decided against it after finding that most of the employees were French speaking and smoked in the workplace. 🙂

It would be amazing to see Cirque du Soleil! We just moved to San Diego in November (military family) and are so amazed by all there is to do here. This would be a perfect date night for me and my husband before he starts training!

I am a clown-phobic gal, but I have been dying to see Cirque Du Soleil perform for years now, so I’ll get over the clowns. LOL

I Love Cirque Du Soleil! When I was 9 years old, my Grandpa got me hooked. It’s what inspired me to become a professional performer.. That experience is one of the fondest memories I have of my Grandpa. It would mean a lot to me to get the chance to feel like that 9 year old boy again. I would love to take my girlfriend because she has never seen a Cirque Du Soleil show.

I have NEVER been to a Cirque show and would love to see what the buzz is all about !

  14. Ginger 03/23/2011 at 11:45 am

My husband and I have been trying, unsuccessfully, to see a Cirque show for about…7 years now. Hopefully we can make it to this one! (whether I win or not!)

I LOVE Cirque Du Soleil! Hubby and I first saw them on our honeymoon at Disneyworld. So mesmerizing. We would be thrilled to experience Quidam 🙂

Cirque is the best. I think it has replaced the traditional circus where there are a lot of issues with animal treatment. I love both I admit but it’s nice to be entertained with a clear conscience. And I am always always in awe at Cirque shows.

Mary, what a thorough and insightful article on the ‘Cirque’! I have been to one, and must say that if one allows themselves to ‘be involved’, it is one of the most incredible entertainment experiences available!

Would love a date night with hubby, and this would be an amazing way to spend it!

I’d love to go! And fortunately, I’m not clown-phobic. Wait, these clowns don’t have like, fangs or anything…right?

  22. Julie {Angry Julie Monday} 03/23/2011 at 9:44 am

Pick me…I’m that weirdo whom has never been to a Cirque show.
