Idita-Read Opens Today

Alaskan Iditarod Sled Dogs

New Reading Incentive for Kids

While the rest of the nation is being blanketed with snow, WorldWide IDEA is inviting families to experience their own wintry excitement in the Idita-Read, a reading adventure that mirrors the Alaskan Iditarod.  Idita-Read gives kids rich interactive maps, online race information, and easy book report options for all grade levels.  Once the race begins, readers simply count every minute read as one mile traveled on the Iditarod Trail and log in their racing progress.    Training camp opens today and the actual race is from March 5 through April 20.

Registration is free on Team Whiteout for all Today’s Mama fans through the Weekly Writer ClubUse the code “Today’s Mama” in the application form.  It’s a great way to encourage kids to start their own reading blizzard in San Diego!

As the author of Alaskan-based adventure ICE ISLAND (Random House, January 2012) for readers 9 – 13 yrs., I’d like to offer a complimentary book (and signed!) to the first 10 teachers who contact me who are using IditaRead in the the classroom this season. ICE ISLAND is the story of two kids who get lost in a freak snowstorm during a training run with their sled dogs. The pair must rely on each other–as well as their faithful dogs–to survive subzero temperatures and bone-numbing exhaustion.
